International Council of Grantdmasters
The International Council of Grandmasters is Exclusive
The International Council of Grandmasters is exclusive, for we will only accept as
members those who have authentic rank and credentials. Candidates who have certificates
from diploma mills or are “self-promoting” will not be given consideration. This is a “union”
of legitimate grandmasters and masters. We provide recognition and certification to existing
legitimate grandmasters and masters. For those others who wish to be considered for
grandmaster recognition, the International Council of Grandmasters has a vetting process
overseen by a screening board made up of experienced tenured grandmasters and senior
masters from various systems. The International Council of Grandmasters is transparent in all
of its activities and requires the utmost integrity from all of its staff and members. It is not an
autocratic “one-man rule” organization as seen in some other sokeship councils. The
International Council of Grandmasters has a Board of Directors and a Board of Advisors
which oversees its operation. The International Council of Grandmasters is a private
membership “at-will” organization, and the Board of Directors reserves the right to refuse
membership to applicants. Council members serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.
“Diploma Mill Masters” Need Not Apply
As you know, anyone can purchase fake rank certification from the various diploma
mills or even self-promote themselves. It is these people who give legitimate martial artists
a bad image to the public and are cancer in our martial arts community. We have worked long
and hard for many years to obtain our legitimate rank and status, and we will not share our
International Council of Grandmasters with frauds, wannabees, and 25-year-old grandmasters.
We cannot stop this unethical prostitution of the martial arts ranking system, for there are no
laws against this activity. The International Council of Grandmasters serves as a clearinghouse and accepts only the
legitimate warriors with authentic credentials. We cannot, and will
not, say someone is NOT a grandmaster or master, but as a private organization, we reserve the
right to refuse recognition and the International Council of Grandmasters certification to those
applicants that we believe are not qualified.
Why Are We “A Council of Martial Arts Unity”
The International Council of Grandmasters is like the U.S. Congress because its’
members are representatives of numerous styles and systems from the United States and
around the world; and represents a diverse group of martial artists and systems that share the
same mindset, ethics, and the Code of Bushido.
Who may apply?
Certified Grandmasters and Masters............
Grandmasters and Masters who have pre-existing authentic credentials, and whose
reputation and background are highly respected in the worldwide martial arts community, are
welcome as members. Most well-known grandmasters and those who are/were members of
other Sokeship Councils may be “grandfathered” into the International Council of
Grandmasters ... NOTE: There may be some grandmasters who hold the rank of 8th or 9th
Degree. Regardless of rank, they will be members of the Grandmaster Division.
ALL grandmaster/master candidates will need to submit the application, copy(s) of
rank and documentation, and a registration/processing fee. (If an application is denied, the
registration fee will be returned..) Black Belts (Associate Memberships)
The International Council of Grandmasters also welcomes black belts and equivalent
ranks into the organization as “associate members.” “Black belt” refers to those martial artists
who hold the rank of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree or equivalent. This division is offered as a
courtesy to grandmaster and master members who wish to offer the International Council of
Grandmasters membership to their black belts as a martial arts career-enhancing experience.
Black Belts must be sponsored for International Council of Grandmasters membership
by their grandmaster/master, who are already International Council of Grandmasters
members themselves. A Black Belt may not join without sponsorship.
Grandmaster Recognition Process
Those applicants who wish to be recognized as a grandmaster of their own system
will be vetted through an in-depth screening process:
(a) Submission of certificates, documents, and letters verifying rank and status.
(b) Avail themselves in front of an oral board made up of grandmasters and senior
(c) Demonstrate to the Board of Directors their physical skill and techniques, which
should be reflective of a grandmaster. They will present to the Board of Directors the major
techniques and principles of the system for which they are wanting to be recognized. If the
candidate is successful in their presentation, they will be offered membership into the
International Council of Grandmasters family of warriors.
